What makes me happy – gratitude and positive thoughts

What makes you happy? - Nikki Young

The first cup of coffee of the day.
Waking up and realising it’s the weekend and you don’t have to get up so early.
Clean, fresh sheets on the bed, cool and crisp.
Wrapping up in a blanket when it’s cold outside.
Thick, knitted socks.
Losing myself in my writing.
Morning sunshine with the promise of a lovely day.
Sitting in my garden with the morning sun gently warming my face.
Curling up on the sofa with a good book.
Movie night with the family.
Sunsets in Yorkshire when the sky is awash with purple, pink and orange shades.
Sipping on Aperol Spritz whilst overlooking the Roman Coliseum.
Spending time with people I love.
Laughing with best friends.
Holding hands.

What makes you happy?

Sometimes, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the whirlwind that is morning commutes, school runs, work, housework and childcare. You can spend your time feeling bogged down and fed up, focusing solely on getting through the day and the next one, and the next…

It’s important to take five minutes, now and then, to think about the things that make you happy, put a smile on your face or that you’re grateful for.

Some people do this every morning, just one thing a day, and they swear it sets them off on the right footing. I can totally understand that, but I don’t do it enough. Do you?

So, I took five minutes to write out a list of things that make ME happy and it did put a smile on my face. I spent a lot of time sitting in traffic in my car yesterday and today, I ache. But I’m trying not to think about that and doing some positive thinking instead. It’s always much easier to turn to the negative thoughts and we have to work hard to not let them be the sole focus of our attention.

Hope your Monday is going well and you’re having a positive start to the week.
